This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $189,830 will support the creation of accurate maps of mobile broadband network coverage quality through 2025. Funded under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program, the award brings together experts from the University of California, Santa Barbara and the Georgia Institute of Technology to develop mathematical models using latent Gaussian processes. These models will combine multiple measurement datasets to predict how cellular network quality varies geographically and over time. The resulting predicted coverage quality maps will be used to create a quality of coverage metric for network users and guide future measurement campaigns toward underserved areas. Project products, including datasets, models, algorithms and publications, will be maintained on an open access website for at least five years following completion. If successful, the work will inform government investment to expand high-quality mobile internet access for all Americans.
