This two-year, $163,559 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), will support the development of high-resolution records of paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) in the Western North Atlantic Ocean between 380,000-780,000 years ago. Specifically, the grantee will reanalyze PSV records including directions, relative paleointensity, and evidence of six magnetic field excursions recorded in deep-sea sediments at Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1060, 1061, 1062, and 1063. This will build upon previous work constructing a composite PSV record for these sites from 0-380,000 years ago. Time series analysis of the new records will evaluate patterns of variability over time and in relation to 18 intervening excursions. Comparison to existing PSV records may provide insights regarding dynamo sources for excursions and normal secular variation. The University of Southern California will perform the work, with the overall goal of improving understanding of the Earth's magnetic field behavior and reversal process.
