This $195,036 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research analyzing paleomagnetic data from sediment and basalt core samples extracted during the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 391. A team of researchers led by The Leland Stanford Junior University will study samples cored from the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic Ocean to develop a paleolatitude record for Late Cretaceous and early Cenozoic volcanoes along the ridge. This record will be compared to existing data from Hawaii-Emperor seamounts to test hypotheses regarding true polar wander and hotspot geodynamics over this time period. The award also supports three early career investigators. In addition, the faculty investigators will recruit undergraduate interns from underrepresented groups in STEM to advance their education through work on this project.
