This five-year, $2.25 million project grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) will support the development of scalable design methodologies for distributed edge-cloud systems to enable multi-party augmented, virtual and mixed reality experiences. A team of researchers led by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will advance computer architecture, programming languages, systems, security and privacy techniques to improve the quality and scalability of extended reality applications across diverse and energy-constrained edge and cloud devices. The work builds on the researchers' previous open-source IlliXR system and aims to close performance gaps through innovations across the software stack. Results will be disseminated via open-source artifacts and publications, with technology transfer supported through industry partnerships. The project aligns with the NSF's mission to advance computing and networking infrastructure and accelerate discovery and innovation.
