An alliance of six California State University campuses was awarded a $205,306 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Computer and Information Science and Engineering program to deliver socially responsible computing curriculum and pedagogy. The alliance will transform early computing courses at the six campuses—Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Fullerton, CSU Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Francisco State University—to better integrate communal goals and demonstrate computing's role in addressing community needs. Through project-based learning incorporating socially responsible design projects, the revised curriculum aims to increase Latinx student retention in computing majors, which has historically been lower than for non-Latinx students. The grant will support faculty learning communities to orient and train new instructors, as well as evaluation of student and faculty outcomes to refine and improve the work throughout the three-year project period ending September 2030.
