This two-year, $599,672 National Science Foundation project grant aims to develop and evaluate an intervention to improve student self-assessment skills and outcomes in introductory computer science courses. Administered through NSF's Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education program (CFDA 47.076), the grant supports research at the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Community College to test an approach for scaffolding students' metacognitive development in computing contexts. The project team will design and implement self-assessment activities, collecting feedback to refine the intervention for approximately 1,000 students across institutional settings. Outcome assessments will examine impacts on learning as well as motivational factors like self-efficacy. As a subawardee, Pellissippi State will coordinate data collection efforts and provide input to analyze results, with the goal of generating evidence-based strategies to advance educational equity and broaden participation in computer science. Findings may offer pedagogical practices to support student success from introductory through subsequent courses in the field.
