This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Biological Infrastructure, under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074), provides $827,019 to the University of Massachusetts to develop models and algorithms for inferring bird population movements from citizen science data. Leveraging billions of bird observations from the eBird citizen science project, the awardee will create computational tools to simulate migratory routes and produce movement forecasts for hundreds of migratory bird species globally. Software and data products will allow scientists to model species-specific migration patterns and gain insights into connectivity between populations. Beginning July 15, 2022, for a three-year period concluding June 30, 2025, this funding will support the awardee in using probabilistic graphical models to learn probability distributions over variables from partial data, with the goal of advancing understanding of migration patterns, drivers, and applications to conservation, disease transmission, and aviation safety.
