This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $216,000 funds a postdoctoral research fellowship in biology for fiscal years 2022 through 2025 under the Biological Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.074). The fellowship supports Dr. Kyle Swentowsky's research and training plan at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to study the developmental genetics and genomics of perennial regrowth in Zea diploperennis. The goal is to better understand the biological processes that allow certain grass species like Z. diploperennis to achieve and maintain a perennial lifecycle through regrowth. Discoveries on perennial regrowth mechanisms could help develop perennial versions of staple cereal crops like corn, improving sustainability and resilience to climate change. The fellow will investigate signaling pathways impacting perennial regrowth using state-of-the-art techniques including single-cell RNA sequencing. All sequencing data and plant materials generated will be made publicly available via national repositories.
