This two-year, $148,000 National Science Foundation project grant supports modeling of long-term urban and rural settlement dynamics through the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075). The grant recipient will conduct archaeological and geospatial analyses to develop a predictive rural site distribution model and targeted survey of an urban hinterland in order to refine global urbanism models. Specifically, the recipient will use low-cost aerial and satellite imagery to detect cultural features, then excavate test sites in the urban hinterland and compare material culture to collections from urban centers. This will enable understanding of spatial and material patterns across time and the urban-rural relationship's evolution from precolonial to 19th century periods. The grant supports an early career scientist conducting this research under the sponsorship of Dr. Carla Klehm at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville from September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2024.
