This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050), provides $360,000 to develop long tree-ring chronologies within and along the boundaries of the Great Plains region. The researchers, led by Columbia University, will use these tree-ring data to reconstruct past drought and moisture conditions over 500-1000 years, creating gridded reconstructions of spring/summer precipitation indices and totals as well as Palmer Drought Severity Index. This will result in the Great Plains Drought Atlas, designed to extend moisture estimates into the Medieval period to test hypotheses about natural climate variability and the possible human influence on recent wet-dry trends. The project aims to reduce uncertainty in Great Plains climate reconstructions by developing more tree-ring data, with potential broader impacts including improved agricultural resilience through better understanding of drought extremes in this critical farm region.
