This $287,252 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Human Resource Development, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), will support research and training at Fayetteville State University from August 2022 to July 2025. The University will investigate regulatory pathways of the virulence factor pyocyanin in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen. Researchers will characterize environmental influences on pyocyanin regulation, determine the effects of transcription factors and small molecules, and explore if regulatory pathways can be applied to other virulence factors. Undergraduate students will gain hands-on research experience in experimental design, literature analysis, and hypothesis testing. Results aim to further the understanding of pyocyanin regulation and could inform studies of other P. aeruginosa virulence genes, with the overall goal of aiding future exploration of antibiotic resistance in this organism.
