The Mid-Hudson Children's Museum (MHCM) received a $525,150 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service under the Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program (FMLFPP) to operate and expand its Poughkeepsie Waterfront Market from September 30, 2021 to September 29, 2024. MHCM opened the market in 2017 to address food insecurity in Poughkeepsie, NY by connecting local farmers with urban consumers. The market focuses on locally-produced food and accepts SNAP, WIC, and Double Up Food Bucks benefits. In response to COVID-19, MHCM opened its 2020 season early and extended it to provide residents access to fresh, healthy food. With prior FMLFPP planning grant support, MHCM completed a master plan for a new "Food Experience Center" to house an expanded year-round market and education center. This Project Grant will support operational aspects of implementing the market's expansion plan to further stabilize the local food system.
