The Yankee Fishermen's Cooperative will receive $772,753.40 through September 2024 under a Project Grant from the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program. The Cooperative will work with New Hampshire Community Seafood to address the aging commercial fishing workforce in New England through expanding regional market access and increasing the viability of fishing businesses that serve local markets. Key initiatives include developing a Young Fishermen's Alliance to identify and train new fishermen aged 45 and under, providing industry training and education in areas such as marketing, business planning, and regulatory standards to increase sales, and facilitating mentorship matching. The project also aims to improve income opportunities and connect local seafood as a valuable protein to low-income, low-access regions through New England food hub networks.
