This three-year, $398,283 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering Education and Centers Division will support an Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Louisville. The REU site will provide multidisciplinary research experiences in solid waste recycling and reuse of construction materials to 24 undergraduate students from institutions with limited research opportunities in established EPSCoR states like Kentucky and West Virginia. Students will participate in interdisciplinary research to make solid waste recycling practical and economical for converting construction, agricultural, industrial, and municipal waste into sustainable construction materials. This will reduce pollution from waste and CO2 emissions from producing new materials. The REU experience aims to increase students' skills, self-efficacy, motivation, and retention in STEM through a 10-week summer research experience each year, along with weekly seminars, professional development workshops, and field trips. Students will gain skills in research, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork/communication. This award supports NSF's mission under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to foster innovation and excellence in engineering research and education.
