This three-year, $431,976 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Engineering Directorate (CFDA 47.041) funds an Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Arkansas focused on high efficiency separations. Ten undergraduate students per year will spend ten weeks conducting research in the laboratories of successful faculty across multiple departments, including Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemistry & Biochemistry. In addition to hands-on research, students will participate in a commercialization assessment training series to understand how academic research and commercialization work together to solve societal challenges. By exposing students to separation processes and their role in manufacturing costs, as well as skills for assessing commercial potential, the REU site aims to teach undergraduates how to create and execute research with real-world applications. The award reflects NSF's mission of supporting merit-reviewed projects advancing innovation, creativity, and U.S. economic and scientific progress.
