The National Science Foundation Division of Mathematical Sciences awarded $480,525 under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (CFDA 47.049) federal grant program to support a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (REU) in mathematical sciences at the University of Maryland - College Park from March 1, 2022 to February 28, 2025. Through this project, the University of Maryland - College Park will provide research experience and professional development to 12 undergraduate students each summer. Students will engage in cutting-edge research projects in fields such as mathematical modeling, machine learning, harmonic analysis, and geometric flows under the supervision of faculty and graduate student mentors. The program aims to nurture research skills, promote independent thinking, and enhance technical and presentation abilities. It also seeks to broaden participation from schools with limited STEM research opportunities. In addition to research, students will participate in seminars and workshops focused on research progress, faculty research expositions, and professional development topics. The funding will allow the University of Maryland - College Park to deliver valuable research training and experience to undergraduate students in the mathematical sciences.
