This National Science Foundation project grant award of $166,162 provides funding from March 1, 2023 through February 28, 2026 to support an undergraduate Research Experiences for Undergraduates site at Washington State University. The site aims to study race and policing through the scientific method by engaging students in three interrelated research projects examining: 1) race and police use of force; 2) race and de-escalation tactics; and 3) race and procedurally just policing. Students will code video and audio data, apply quantitative methods such as GIS, time-series analysis and data visualization to generate innovative data on these topics. The goals are to recruit promising students, provide real-world research experiences integrating theory and application, increase knowledge of policing and race, develop professional skills, and prepare students for further education and careers. This award supports the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program's mission to promote basic research and education in these fields.
