The National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs awarded the University of Wisconsin-Madison $622,183 under the Polar Programs federal grant program (CFDA 47.078) to conduct research on wave erosion of ice cliffs from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2026. Specifically, the project will investigate wave erosion processes in icebergs, glaciers, and ice shelves through laboratory experiments. This aims to improve understanding of fundamental wave erosion physics and develop new parameterizations of iceberg decay for comprehensive ocean models. The parameterizations seek to reduce uncertainty in climate projections and sea level rise estimates associated with ice loss modeling. The funding will also support graduate student training and involve K-12 teachers through summer research experiences to further science education.
