Description

Some of their activities will include reading with elementary school children, delivering meals to homebound, driving elderly to medical appointments, volunteering in support of the food pantry and the local hospital. The primary focus area of this project is healthy futures. At the end of the three-year grant period, 150 elementary school children will have been helped to improve reading levels, over 300 elderly people will receive medical transportation and meals to help them stay in their home, and hundreds will receive nutritious food from the food pantry. The cncs federal investment of $47500 will be supplemented by $15855 state funds and various local donations and the fellowship cup, including a donation of $10,000 from our county. Forty-one unduplicated volunteers support healthy futures, with 58 total volunteers helping this cause. Through the county food pantry 32 people support the organization by helping distribute food and working at the pantry's second-hand store. Twenty-five people volunteer to drive elderly and/or handicapped individuals to medical appointments. Eighteen individuals in three county locations help to prepare and deliver food to home bound elderly people. Forty-four people volunteer to read with elementary students working to improve reading skills. Four schools ask for volunteers for this endeavor, three of which have been responsive in signing MOU's and therefore have had volunteers placed. Reports received at the end of the school year have shown marked improvement in reading scores.
