About this award

The National Science Foundation awarded a $447,680 Project Grant to the University of California, Berkeley under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to support a multi-disciplinary investigation of slab deformation and resulting seismic anisotropy from the transition zone to the base of the mantle. The three-year project beginning July 1, 2021 will utilize Berkeley's expertise in geophysics, seismology and geodynamics to advance fundamental understanding of integrated Earth system processes through basic research on the behavior of tectonic plates as they descend into the deep mantle. Findings from the investigation have the potential to provide new insights into mantle dynamics and seismic wave propagation relevant to the Geosciences program's goals of expanding knowledge of Earth system interactions. The Regents of the University of California will oversee delivery of the research objectives through the University's Berkeley campus.
