Project Grant 20266703945672
- The University of Missouri System was awarded a $650,000 Project Grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will fund a 4-year research project from February 2026 to February 2030 focused on investigating the role of lipid modifications in regulating root growth and patterning in rice plants in response to stress conditions such as phosphate deficiency and salinity....
- The University of Missouri System was awarded a $749,611 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant aims to develop parasitic plant-resistant crop varieties through genetic and molecular analysis of host defense responses during parasitic plant attachment and infection. Researchers will study the Arabidopsis-broomrape parasitic plant...
- The University of Missouri System was awarded $750,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program by the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to conduct research on plant immunity to pathogens from May 15, 2023 to May 14, 2026. The University will study the function of the front portion of the bacterial effector protein AvrRps4, which is recognized by plant immune receptors and triggers immunity in some plants....
- The University of Missouri System was awarded a $448,458 project grant by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant supports the continued evaluation and development of new, regionally adapted hazelnut cultivars with enhanced resistance to eastern filbert blight and improved kernel quality to meet confectionery market standards. The project coordinates multi-year trials to assess nut yield, phenology,...
- The University of Missouri System received a $749,985 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA program on July 1, 2024. The grant aims to enhance broad-based resistance against soybean cyst nematodes (SCN), a major pest that causes over $1.5B in annual yield losses to soybean production in the U.S. Through integrated genomics and gene-editing research, the project will identify and develop novel...
- This $500,000 project grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310), will support research to gain insights into differential host susceptibility to infection by fungal pathogens. The project will utilize wild host models to provide greater predictive potential on emerging infectious diseases of crop plants. Key research activities include sophisticated microscopic analysis of...
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded Purdue University a $849,027 grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The project aims to use wild-crop grafting as a novel approach to identify and counteract the negative impacts of domestication on root and leaf microbial communities involved in defense against insect pests. Combining greenhouse and field experiments with techniques like metabolomics and...
- The University of Missouri System was awarded a three-year, $749,324 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The grant will support the development of a soil health information platform and decision support tool to improve the usefulness and applicability of existing soil health indicator data for farmers in the U.S. Corn Belt region. Working...
- The Regents of the University of Michigan received a $481,000 project grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) program. The grant aims to enhance disease resistance and productivity of cotton crops by determining the genetic diversity, evolution, and pathogenicity of the Fusarium wilt pathogen, as well as identifying cotton resistance mechanisms. The research represents a systems approach to deciphering...
- The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $686,010 grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will fund research to address Fusarium graminearum, a fungus that causes major diseases in wheat, barley, rice, and corn crops, including Fusarium head blight and Gibberella ear rot. The key objectives are to develop new tools and resources to study, track, and model the Fusarium pathogen...
The University of Missouri System was awarded a $300,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will fund a research project to investigate the causes of a Fusarium fungal disease, known as fig endosepsis, that can lead to up to 50% crop losses in cultivated figs (Ficus carica) in the United States. The project aims to test two hypotheses: 1) that the loss of a naturally occurring nematode species in the transition of figs from the Mediterranean to the U.S. has allowed the Fusarium fungus to thrive, and 2) that the movement of figs through Central America introduced new Fusarium species not previously associated with the crop. To examine these hypotheses, the researcher will establish a greenhouse population of 250 fig trees at the University of Missouri and conduct controlled experiments manipulating the presence of nematodes and multiple Fusarium species. The project will run from May 2026 to April 2028.
