Project Grant 20266701546802
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded West Texas A&M University $300,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on September 15, 2026. The project compares gut microbiota and gene activity development in calves raised in dairy settings versus traditional beef production systems. The research examines digestive-tract bacterial communities and intestinal tissue gene expression to understand how early-life management practices...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Illinois $650,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) on September 15, 2026, to validate digital phenotyping technologies for genomic selection in beef cattle. The research will establish the first large-scale validation comparing digital traits captured through imaging technology against conventional phenotypic records such as manual weighing and visual...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas A&M Agrilife Research $650,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program to investigate the genetic contributions of male and female parents to pregnancy establishment and maintenance in cattle, with particular focus on embryonic mortality during days 28–60 of gestation. The research addresses late-stage embryonic loss, which occurs in approximately 12...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $299,440 to the University of Missouri System on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct research on reproductive and genomic technologies for beef cattle breeding systems. The award supports research aimed at increasing adoption of genomic testing and artificial insemination—particularly sex-sorted semen—within commercial beef operations to enable precision...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $650,000 to Texas Tech University on February 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to conduct a four-year field study evaluating a selective antibiotic treatment approach for metritis in dairy cattle, running through February 14, 2030. The project will test a data-driven method that uses routinely collected farm information to identify which cows with metritis require antibiotic...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Arizona State University $591,500 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on June 1, 2026. The project develops new methods to measure how changes in market structure in the U.S. beef supply chain affect the prices cattle producers receive, the wages workers earn, and the prices consumers pay for beef. The research uses data from cattle markets, retail grocery stores, and national labor surveys...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas Tech University System $468,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on April 1, 2026. Texas Tech University will develop virus-mediated, tissue culture-free genome editing methods for tomato and pepper crops, eliminating reliance on inefficient tissue culture regeneration. The research will demonstrate these tools by introducing abiotic stress tolerance, water use efficiency, and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $650,000 to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to investigate interleukin-6 family signaling proteins and their roles in early embryonic development and pregnancy establishment in cattle. The research has three specific aims: determine how IL6-family signals guide early embryo formation, particularly the...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas A&M Agrilife Research $779,000 on January 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to investigate the role of Mycoplasma bovis in bovine respiratory disease and improve disease detection and management in beef cattle. The research examines how Mycoplasma bovis behaves in healthy cattle and in cattle with early and chronic forms of bovine respiratory disease, focusing on cattle populations...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Illinois one million dollars on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop a video-based gait analysis system for characterizing structural conformation in beef cattle and to prevent lameness in feedlot and cow-calf production systems. The recipient will develop a robust gait analysis system to describe structural conformation of beef steers for...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas Tech University $650,000 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to develop new measurements for red meat yield that more accurately predict beef production than the USDA Yield Grade system developed nearly 60 years ago. The project will evaluate approximately 1,000 cattle representing major U.S. beef breeds using traditional measurements and advanced imaging technologies including 3-D cameras to measure body dimensions, then CT scan carcasses after harvest to determine true muscle, fat, and bone content. Researchers will identify which live-animal measurements best predict red meat yield and develop practical, standardized methods for breed associations and producers to collect these measurements. Results will establish a new set of scientifically validated traits incorporated into national cattle breeding programs and disseminated through scientific publications, producer meetings, workshops, and educational programs. Work is performed in Lubbock, Texas, with a period of performance from September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2029. The project aims to provide cattle producers with improved genetic selection tools to breed more efficient cattle producing more saleable beef while using fewer resources, strengthening profitability, sustainability, and global competitiveness of the U.S. beef industry.
