Project Grant 20266701446814
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded New Mexico State University $759,000 on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop mechanically harvestable, Phytophthora capsici–resistant New Mexico type chile cultivars and to establish a cross-institutional graduate student exchange program. New Mexico State University and Cornell University will combine resources from their chile breeding programs to...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Montana State University $500,000 on January 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop durum wheat varieties adapted to Montana's semi-arid growing conditions. Montana State University, through its Office of Sponsored Programs, will combine traditional field breeding with modern genetic tools to create durum wheat lines suited to the state's climate. The project...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $618,000 to the University of California, Davis on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop wheat varieties that remain short and lodging-resistant while growing more vigorously and efficiently under stressful conditions. The project introduces alternative plant height genes into well-adapted wheat varieties and tests them under field conditions, including...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Utah State University $299,630 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to investigate biological control programs for squash bugs in watermelon and cucurbit production. The project addresses squash bug (Anasa tristis) management challenges in Florida watermelons and Utah cucurbits, where current practice relies on broad-spectrum insecticides that harm pollinators and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of California, Davis $649,995 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on September 15, 2026, to conduct single-cell genomic research on maize ear development and kernel row number variation. The research team will use single-cell RNA sequencing to create detailed maps of gene activity in developing ear tips from teosinte, modern maize, and related lines with unusually high or low...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Utah State University $780,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) on May 1, 2026. The award funds STEM education and curriculum development in agricultural sciences, with emphasis on agriscience and agricultural technology pathways for K–12 students, particularly targeting increased diversity and engagement among underrepresented populations in agriculture-related career tracks....
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Lincoln University $599,723 on December 15, 2025, under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program (CFDA 10.216) to optimize macronutrient management practices in quinoa production. The project evaluates nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium application levels and timing to improve quinoa grain yield and seed quality, integrating manual and high-throughput aerial phenotyping methods to measure plant traits....
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Washington State University $649,510 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to investigate a natural plant regulatory system that controls crop growth and stress response in canola. The research examines previously developed canola plants with improved seed size, higher oil content, and greater salt tolerance by studying changes in plant growth, seed development,...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Iowa State University $500,000 on January 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to accelerate the release of improved mung bean cultivars through genomics and phenomics tools and coordinated network trials. Iowa State University, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota, Texas A & M University, the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, industry partners, and...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Utah State University $637,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to deliver a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Agricultural Biotechnology Research Experience (SURE) program. USU will host undergraduate students from non-research-intensive regional campuses for hands-on agricultural biotechnology research in Logan, Utah. Participants will be matched with...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Brigham Young University $415,824 on September 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop quinoa varieties adapted to U.S. domestic production conditions beyond the Pacific Northwest and high-elevation Colorado regions where the crop currently thrives. The project generates new quinoa lines by crossing cultivated quinoa varieties with wild relatives collected throughout the U.S. using a multi-parent intercrossing scheme. Researchers will create a pangenome assembly representing the collective genomic sequences of all parent plants, then use that pangenome to identify DNA sequence variants in derived progeny lines. Genetic mapping will identify sequence variants that regulate desirable agronomic traits, particularly those enabling quinoa to grow in lowland tropical, subtropical, and warm-season temperate environments where the crop does not currently perform well due to its native adaptation to high-elevation, cool-temperature Andean conditions. Performance of performance is Provo, Utah. The award runs through August 31, 2030.
