- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded North Dakota State University a $371,333 Project Grant under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to conduct wheat breeding for enhanced Fusarium head blight resistance in North Dakota. The grant period is from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2026 and will support research to develop wheat varieties with improved resistance to Fusarium head blight, a fungal disease that reduces wheat yields and...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded North Dakota State University a $376,240 Project Grant under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to conduct research from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2026. The university will breed durum wheat varieties with improved resistance to Fusarium head blight, also known as scab, under this funding. By developing wheat cultivars less susceptible to this fungal disease, the university aims to help...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $618,000 to the University of California, Davis on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop wheat varieties that remain short and lodging-resistant while growing more vigorously and efficiently under stressful conditions. The project introduces alternative plant height genes into well-adapted wheat varieties and tests them under field conditions, including...
- Federal Grant Award Summary North Dakota State University received a $744,729 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded on August 1, 2025, with completion targeted for July 31, 2028. The award funds research to characterize bean rust disease caused by Uromyces appendiculatus, a significant threat to domestic dry and snap bean production. The project will...
- Federal Grant Award Summary North Dakota State University received $849,702 in project grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) for a three-year research project running from August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2028. The award supports a comprehensive research investigation into the dynamic interactions within the barley microbiome during Fusarium Head Blight...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded South Dakota State University $144,727 on May 1, 2026, under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) to develop and release hard winter wheat and winter durum cultivars with Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) resistance for the U.S. Great Plains. The project will increase the frequency of major and minor resistance genes, implement genomic and phenomics prediction strategies, and coordinate regional...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Dakota State University $584,620 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on May 1, 2026, to investigate bacterial leaf streak disease in wheat caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. undolosa, which causes up to 60% yield losses in susceptible spring wheat cultivars in the Upper Great Plains. The recipient will employ conventional, molecular, and genomic methods to determine pathogen...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Montana State University $500,000 on January 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop durum wheat varieties adapted to Montana's semi-arid growing conditions. Montana State University, through its Office of Sponsored Programs, will combine traditional field breeding with modern genetic tools to create durum wheat lines suited to the state's climate. The project...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded North Dakota State University $799,013 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to develop genomic resources and pre-breeding germplasm from Aegilops umbellulata (a wheat wild relative) for introgression into cultivated wheat. The research identifies novel alleles and genes for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in wheat by comprehensively phenotyping an Aegilops umbellulata germplasm collection across stress tolerance, morphological, agronomic, and developmental traits. The work applies k-mer association genetics analyses to candidate genes and conducts functional characterization validation. Selected highly variable genotypes undergo development into AABBUU amphiploids and U-genome specific introgression libraries in cultivated wheat backgrounds. The resulting genomic resources and pre-breeding germplasm are intended to provide public and private U.S. wheat breeding programs with novel trait reservoirs to enhance resilience and productivity and support next-generation cultivars for U.S. food security. Performance occurs at North Dakota State University in North River, North Dakota. The period of performance runs from September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2029. This is a Project Grant, the assistance type under AFRI.
