About this award
The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $649,877 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) to advance the understanding and improvement of vinca alkaloid profiles in Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). The project, which commenced September 1, 2025 and concludes August 31, 2028, applies genetics and biotechnology approaches to enhance the production of vinca alkaloids—complex pharmaceutical compounds currently used clinically as anti-cancer agents. This research addresses significant commercial production constraints, as vinca alkaloids are presently extracted from plant leaves in limited quantities and require complex purification from mixtures, creating supply shortages. By improving vinca alkaloid yields and profiles through selective breeding and biotechnology, the project aims to increase the availability of these critical pharmaceutical compounds while reducing dependency on natural extraction methods.
The project includes two sub-grantees awarded February 9, 2026: the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology (Max-Planck-Gesellschaft) and Michigan State University, both collaborating on leveraging a Catharanthus roseus germplasm panel to enhance vinca alkaloid production. These partnerships extend the project's research capacity by combining expertise in plant chemistry, genomic analysis, and breeding genetics to identify and develop cultivars with improved natural product profiles, consistent with AFRI's commitment to stimulating agricultural innovation and advancing the bioeconomy through competitive, peer-reviewed research.
Description
These plant natural products enhance plant fitness, and, moreover, many of these molecules have been used with great success as pharmaceuticals to treat a wide range of human diseases. For example, madagascar periwinkle produces vinca alkaloids that are currently in use in the clinic as anti-cancer agents. Due to their complex chemical structures, the vinca alkaloids are still extracted from leaves for commercial production. Unfortunately, this production process has led to shortages, since this molecule is produced as part of a complex mixture, its biosynthesis is restricted to specific cell-types, and IT is produced in small amounts.genetic breeding has yielded crops with enhanced natural product profiles exemplified by numerous culinary herbs (basil, thyme), cannabis (cannabinoid profiles), and eucalyptus (essential oil profiles). With respect to pharmaceuticals, artemisia annua (sweet wormwood), breeding has led to improvements in the yields of artemisinin, an anti-malarial drug. In this project, we will use genetics and biotechnology to understand and begin to improve vinca alkaloid profiles in madagascar periwinkle.
