This federal Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program provides $300,000 to the University of Nebraska to develop and test a skill assessment tool for scoring animal handler skill levels. The objectives are to investigate the relationship between self-reported handler experience, expert-scored skill level, and animal behavior, as well as the relationship between years of experience,...
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) was awarded a $1,750,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant, awarded on September 1, 2023, with a completion date of August 31, 2027, will support research to understand the metabolic pathways and mitochondrial dynamics activated during ovulation and luteinization in beef cattle. The goals of the...
The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska was awarded a $5,000,000 Project Grant by the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to develop science-based dietary and management intervention strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cattle. The project aims to understand the genetic, dietary, and microbial factors that influence methane production in ruminant livestock, with the goal of translating these findings into practical mitigation strategies for...
The University of Nebraska received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the US Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The four-year project aims to maximize livestock growth efficiency and sustainability in the beef cattle industry. Researchers will study genetic variation in mitochondrial DNA, which is maternally inherited and critical to cellular energy production. They will associate...
The University of Nebraska was awarded a $650,000 Project Grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program. The grant, awarded on July 1, 2024, will fund research to develop a better understanding of how excess androgen in the ovarian microenvironment of cattle can impair follicle development and ovulation, which is a major cause of infertility in cattle. The research aims to identify critical...
This $481,756 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.246 - Research Facilities Act Program) will renovate and modernize the Meat Science Laboratory (MSL) at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. The project will create new laboratory space, renovate kitchen facilities, and install upgraded air handling systems to enhance the MSL's capacity for research on meat quality and alternative protein foods. This will enable...
The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded a $499,913 Project Grant to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to support research titled "Risks Associated with Genetically Engineered Microbes in Beef Cattle Production: Evaluation of Persistence, Transmission and Ecological Consequences" from August 15, 2022 through August 14, 2026. This $482,900 federal Project Grant award, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Research Facilities Act Program (CFDA 10.246), will support the renovation and modernization of the cattle handling system at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's (UNL) Animal Science Department.

The existing cattle handling system, constructed nearly 40 years ago, has become inadequate to accommodate modern, wider cattle due to genetic changes. This has led to increased handling stress and difficulty moving animals through the facility, which is utilized extensively for research, teaching, and outreach by UNL's Animal Science Department as well as the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The grant funding will enable UNL to construct a new, updated cattle handling system that can better accommodate current animal sizes and reduce handling stress, improving research, educational, and outreach capabilities for the next 40 years. This project will be executed over a 2-year period from September 2024 to September 2026.
