This $1,200,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Education Grants Program (CFDA 10.223) will train at least 15 bachelor's, 9 master's, and 2 doctoral students from underrepresented communities at two Hispanic-Serving Institutions in partnership with an elite research institution. The goal is to develop an integrated educational model to build a diverse, skilled workforce capable of addressing the emerging challenge of micro-nanoplastics (MNPs) contamination in agriculture and food systems. The project will provide multidisciplinary curricula, hands-on training in advanced instrumentation and data analysis, direct interactions with scientists and professionals, collaborative research opportunities, and dedicated leadership and community engagement activities. The training model and scientific findings will be broadly shared to help develop an urgently needed workforce to mitigate the impacts of MNPs on food security and safety.
