This $109,090 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Food Safety Outreach Program (CFDA 10.328) will be used by the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension to build local training and education capacity to support Hawaii's food processors, manufacturers, and sprout growers in complying with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

The key products and services to be delivered include: 1) identifying and supporting eligible food safety educators within the University of Hawaii, partner state agencies, and community organizations to complete Sprouts Safety Alliance (SSA) grower training and/or Preventative Controls for Human Foods (PCHF) courses, and become certified lead instructors; 2) enhancing trainer capacity by contracting established lead instructors from partner institutions to co-teach PCHF and SSA courses with the new local trainers; and 3) collecting evaluation data from the lead instructors, new local trainers, and course attendees to provide feedback and improve the local food safety education programs. The project aims to establish stable, local training capacity to support the adoption and compliance with FSMA requirements, build partnerships with local communities and organizations, and improve public health through a safer local food system in Hawaii.
