The University of Maryland, College Park was awarded a $648,488 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant, awarded on July 15, 2024, aims to address higher poultry mortality and production efficiency issues in antibiotic/chemical-free backyard and integrated farms. Specifically, the research will: 1) investigate the sources and transmission routes of Avibacterium paragallinarum (AP) and Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) in the farm environment, and develop strategies to limit their spread; and 2) evaluate the impact of bioactive probiotics and plant-derived phenolics in improving poultry health, immunity, and microbiota, and controlling AP and IBV colonization using a day-old chick model. The goal is to develop a comprehensive approach to control poultry diseases and enhance growth rates in sustainable integrated poultry farming systems. The 3-year project will be conducted at the University of Maryland, College Park.
