This $649,882 federal Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program supports research to quantify the reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of efficient irrigation techniques in corn and cotton production systems. The overarching goal is to provide more informed climate-smart irrigation solutions and encourage their adoption by demonstrating the potential for emissions reduction and increased profits through carbon credits. The project will experimentally assess the impact of various irrigation methods on GHG emissions and develop mathematical models to predict emissions reduction for different climate, soil, crop, and irrigation system scenarios. This work aims to increase the sustainability of U.S. agriculture by promoting the adoption of irrigation techniques that reduce water use and GHG emissions. The award was made to Texas A&M AgriLife Research, a premier agricultural research agency and land-grant institution, with a performance period from Sep 1, 2024 to Aug 31, 2027.
