The University of Texas at Austin was awarded a $299,631 project grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant will fund a 2-year research project to examine the effects of drought on nitrogen fixation by mesquite trees and the resulting impacts on rangeland ecosystem services, such as forage quality, biodiversity, and soil carbon, in the southwestern United States. The project will involve two greenhouse experiments and field sampling to develop a predictive understanding of how changes in nitrogen fixation under drought conditions may affect key rangeland ecosystem services across a rainfall gradient in Texas. The findings from this research are intended to help improve management of rangelands in the southwest as the region experiences more frequent and severe droughts due to climate change.
