The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. was awarded a $784,060 Project Grant from the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, effective July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2027. The grant supports research to assess how fire intensity and seasonality impact mortality and post-fire growth of oak tree species. The project has four key objectives: 1) determine fire intensity thresholds for oak sapling mortality and productivity; 2) evaluate how those relationships change based on the timing of fires relative to oak growth/dormancy cycles; 3) assess the mechanisms driving fire-induced mortality in oak saplings; and 4) share data and results with forestry modeling teams. The University of Georgia is partnering with Texas Tech University, Washington State University, and the University of Idaho on this multi-institution project under three sub-awards totaling an additional $1,050,000 in funding.
