The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) awarded a $490,000 Project Grant to Texas A&M AgriLife Research. This 3-year grant, running from March 2024 to February 2027, focuses on developing germplasm and economic tools to establish a new U.S. market for high-oil content peanuts grown exclusively for oil production. The key objectives are to: 1) Develop peanut germplasm with increased oil content that can be grown with reduced inputs, 2) Develop genomic and phenomic tools to quickly determine oil content for breeding programs and processors, and 3) Develop economic models to explore the value chain and viability of a high-oil peanut market. This work aims to position the U.S. as a net exporter of peanut oil, rather than a net importer as it is currently. Texas A&M AgriLife Research, as a state government entity and land-grant institution, will leverage its extensive research capabilities and facilities to deliver these outcomes.
