The award funds renovation and modernization of Purdue's existing swine breeding and gestation facilities located in West Lafayette, Indiana. These infrastructure improvements are...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) to investigate the effects of uterine crowding on fetal development in commercial swine. The research, conducted in Lexington, Kentucky from February 1, 2026 through January 31, 2030, employs two surgical methodologies to experimentally...
- Federal Project Grant Summary Iowa State University of Science and Technology received a $299,987 Project Grant award from the USDA's Institute of Bioenergy, Climate, and Environment under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program (CFDA 10.310), effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029. This three-year initiative addresses critical challenges in swine production by developing evidence-based ventilation management practices that improve...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $174,712.31 project grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), awarded on September 15, 2025, with completion targeted for January 31, 2026. The grant supports research to elucidate the mechanisms by which Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) crosses the porcine placenta and causes fetal...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $238,517.56 project grant from the Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program (CFDA 10.310), with performance from February 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. This research project will investigate the effects of early-life stressors—including weaning and transport—on thyroid hormone function,...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Texas A&M University and University of Missouri-Columbia are developing an innovative cyber-physical system designed to substantially reduce preweaning mortality (PWM) in swine production under a $396,831 Project Grant awarded March 15, 2026, by the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The three-year project, concluding March 14, 2029, and performed in...
- The Agricultural Research Service awarded Purdue University a $195,810 cooperative agreement under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) from July 2021 through May 2025. The award will support research to identify sows most susceptible to producing offspring negatively impacted by in utero heat stress using functional genomics. Researchers will then evaluate the subsequent effects of in utero heat stress susceptibility on the health and behavior of pigs. By...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Pennsylvania received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, with an award date of February 1, 2026, and a completion date of January 31, 2029. This research project delivers scientific assessment tools and empirical data to evaluate the welfare of pregnant and lactating sows under different housing conditions. The primary...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Missouri System received a Project Grant award of $150,559.76 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), with an award date of May 15, 2025 and completion date of June 30, 2026. This research initiative focuses on improving swine production during summer months by identifying genetic traits and developing genomic selection...
**AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA OF SWINE NUTRITION AND MANAGEMENT AT UK ARE NOW HAMPERED BY AN AGING VENTILATION SYSTEM THAT CANNOT BE RESTORED TO PROPER FUNCTIONALITY. THE LOSS OF VENTILATION CAPABILITIES HINDERS PROPER ANIMAL WELLBEING DURING PERIODS OF THE YEAR, THUS REDUCING THE CAPACITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE RESEARCH RELATED TO PROVIDING AN ADEQUATE, NUTRITIOUS, AND SAFE SUPPLY OF FOOD FOR HUMAN NUTRITIONAL DEMAND. IT ALSO COMPROMISES THE PLANS FOR THE EXPANDED FOOD PRODUCTS FACILITIES WHICH WILL DEVELOP NEW USES AND NEW PRODUCTS FOR PORK AT THE RESEARCH FARM WHERE THE SWINE RESEARCH UNIT IS LOCATED. UPGRADING THE VENTILATION SYSTEM TO A SYSTEM THAT THE INDUSTRY-STANDARD WILL ALLOW THE CONTINUANCE OF THIS UNIQUE HERD, WHICH IS FREE OF DISEASES THAT ARE ROUTINELY VACCINATED FOR IN EVERY OTHER HERD IN THE COUNTRY. THE PERFORMANCE OF THESE PIGS IS EXCEPTIONAL AND ALLOWS RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED THAT IS STRICTLY RELATED TO THE BIOLOGY OF THE PIG WITHOUT THE INTERACTION WITH DISEASE. THE USE OF INDUSTRY-STANDARD EQUIPMENT WITH INDUSTRY-STANDARD INSTALLATION WILL MAKE LONG-TERM UPKEEP AND MAINTENANCE EASY AND AFFORDABLE. THE END RESULT OF THIS ACTIVITY WILL BE A FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION SYSTEM THAT IS AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLLED AND IS CONSTRUCTED WITH THE MINIMAL AMOUNT OF COST, THUS ENABLING THE CONTINUED RESEARCH OUTPUT OF AN EXTREMELY PRODUCTIVE SWINE RESEARCH GROUP.
