Project Grant 20236801539985
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) is focused on improving antimicrobial stewardship in the beef cattle industry. The $221,322 award to Mississippi State University will measure the voluntary consumption of chlortetracycline-medicated mineral supplements by cattle on pasture, analyze the resulting antibiotic concentrations in the...
- This $241,000 Project Grant award, provided by the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) through the Higher Education National Needs Graduate Fellowship Grants program (CFDA 10.210), supports the training of graduate students in animal production, pathobiology, genomics, and data science at Kansas State University. The goal is to develop a highly skilled workforce capable of addressing complex challenges in agriculture, food systems, and...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Purdue University $650,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program to conduct research from June 2023 to May 2027 related to beef cattle production efficiency and health. Specifically, the university will analyze changes in the ruminal, intestinal, and cecal microbiome of grain-finished cattle administered tylosin and monensin antibiotics to characterize...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) awarded a $648,620.00 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to Kansas State University to examine the use of precision feeding strategies to improve the environmental and economic sustainability of beef production for small- and medium-sized feedlot producers. The key objectives are to evaluate animal performance, feed efficiency, enteric methane production, and...
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, with CFDA # 10.310, provides $994,586 to study the effectiveness of new rules and technologies in reducing the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on dairy farms. The 5-year project, awarded on July 15, 2025, will assess the impact of regulations limiting antibiotic use, evaluate manure treatment methods for...
- Kansas State University will receive $649,981 under a Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture to assess the consequences of sustainability and development policies on global soybean markets. The grant is part of NIFA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program, which provides funding for agricultural research, extension, and education activities. Specifically, Kansas State University researchers...
- Kansas State University will receive $999,397 over four years from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310) to address an emerging threat to wheat exports from the U.S. Southern Great Plains region. The university will phenotype fungal plant pathogen isolates, conduct genetic analysis, develop and validate molecular diagnostic tools, evaluate environmental...
- The Pennsylvania State University was awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund the development and validation of a novel resistome profiling system to track antimicrobial resistance genes across the food supply chain. Penn State researchers will refine their dual enzyme enrichment method and validate it in...
- The Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service awarded Kansas State University $399,963 under the Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA 10.001) for the period of February 13, 2023 through February 12, 2025. The Cooperative Agreement will support Kansas State University's development of agriculture model capabilities for emerging disease threats. Specifically, the university will leverage its expertise to conduct research that evaluates alternative approaches...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant award, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, aims to promote increased adoption of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) practices in the dairy industry. The grant, awarded to Michigan State University from July 2024 to June 2026, will: Determine barriers to changing antimicrobial usage (AMU) by surveying farmers and veterinarians in Michigan and Wisconsin to identify their beliefs,...
Kansas State University was awarded a $999,999 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will fund research from May 1, 2023 through April 30, 2026 to generate data on the impact of chlortetracycline plus macrolide antimicrobial combinations on animal health and performance in beef cattle. Specifically, the university will conduct a field study in a commercial feedyard to evaluate in-feed chlortetracycline administered in one and two pulses plus injectable tulathromycin as metaphylaxis. The university will collect and analyze samples to determine prevalence and abundance of tetracycline and macrolide resistance genes in respiratory pathogens, gut microbes, and foodborne pathogens from cattle. A subset of samples will undergo metagenomic analysis to identify bacterial communities and antimicrobial resistance genes. Results will inform the development of training materials to recommend antimicrobial use practices and effective mitigation strategies to producers and stakeholders.
