The University of Florida was awarded a $918,472 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program.
The goal of the grant is to improve food security for low-income families with children ages 0-2 years old through four objectives: conducting an inventory of emergency food program availability and quality of foods appropriate for this age group; formative research with stakeholders to identify barriers to obtaining adequate, age-appropriate food; developing and disseminating an evidence-informed program and policy toolkit for stakeholders; and assessing changes in availability of age-appropriate foods and other outcomes. The University will conduct research and outreach activities in an intervention community in Gainesville, Florida from April 2023 through April 2028 to address barriers and opportunities for improving the early childhood food environment and reducing future health risks.
