The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Aerodyne Research Inc. a $1,199,956 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310). The three-year award running from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2026 will fund the development of novel in-situ soil microsensors and reactive transport modeling to study biogeochemical transformations in the rhizosphere. Aerodyne will create an automated non-destructive microdialysis probe system to observe low molecular weight dissolved organic matter transformations at high spatial, temporal, and molecular resolution. In collaboration with subawardees The Pennsylvania State University and the Arizona Board of Regents, the project aims to map soil water chemistry, sequence microbial DNA/RNA, and perform enzyme assays to inform reactive transport models exploring the impact of root characteristics on soil organic matter storage and carbon/nitrogen cycling near plant roots. The comprehensive dataset and modeling will provide insight into nutrient uptake relationships and how the root-soil interface influences plant growth, agricultural sustainability, and climate change resilience.
