This $649,950 project grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program, will fund research to conduct high-resolution integrated assessments of tillage practice impacts on crop production and agroecosystem sustainability in the US Midwest. The University of Illinois, lead awardee, will collaborate with sub-awardees the University of Minnesota and Indiana University to achieve the stated objectives through February 2026. Specifically, the team will collect field data and conduct meta-analyses to quantify impacts of tillage practices on crop yields and environmental metrics for corn and soybeans. They will also map field-scale tillage practices over 2000-2023 for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota using airborne and satellite data with machine learning. Additionally, the researchers will constrain and validate the ECOSYS biogeochemical model with experimental and satellite-derived data to simulate tillage impacts on crops and sustainability metrics to support policy and farmer decision-making.
