Description
Awards issued prior to january 20, 2025, were funded under previous administrations and may not reflect the priorities and policies of the current administration.** academia and industry continue to invest heavily in the screening and isolation of promising microbial candidates, but most inoculants are not able to survive and persist in a wide range of soil environments. This has led to varied and unreliable outcomes in the field and remains a major barrier to integrating microbial inoculants into sustainable farming practices. The objective of this research project is therefore to enhance the ability of beneficial bacterial inoculants to compete and function in a recipient soil environment, which will be achieved by applying directed selection pressures to microbes in culture to accelerate their evolution toward phenotypes with increased survival and persistence in novel soils. Insights gleaned from this project will directly inform how to grow beneficial microbial products in a way that maximizes their persistence and functional contributions in soil settings, while advancing our fundamental understanding of microbial evolution in complex environments. Ultimately, this work has the potential to improve the reliability of microbial inoculant contributions toward sustainable agriculture.
