Kentucky State University was awarded a $600,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program (CFDA 10.216). Through this three-year award ending in May 2026, Kentucky State University will establish the Thorobred Academy to improve STEAM enrollment, retention, and research training among dual credit high school students. Key services include developing academic pathways in STEM and agriculture disciplines; hiring academic liaisons to increase recruitment of local high school students to the program; establishing research, internship, and enrichment projects engaging students with university professors and staff; and creating a summer academy providing underserved urban youth access to college courses. It is anticipated these efforts will increase dual credit matriculation percentages and strengthen academic programs at Kentucky State University, an 1890 land-grant, historically black university located in Frankfort, Kentucky.
