Project Grant 20226701536321
- This Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) provides $650,000 to the University of Connecticut to study the impact of poor maternal nutrition during gestation on mitochondrial function and offspring growth in sheep. The researchers will assess the ability of liver and muscle mitochondria to produce ATP in offspring of poorly nourished ewes, identify...
- The University of Wisconsin System has been awarded a $650,000 project grant under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to conduct research on how parental diets affect the health, productivity, and reproduction of their offspring. The key products or services to be delivered include: 1) Studying the combined effects of male and female sheep diets, by providing methionine supplements before breeding and observing traits in multiple...
- The University of Connecticut will receive $499,996 under a five-year Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to conduct the "Bridging the Gap II: Summer Experiential Learning in Food and Nutrition" program. The project aims to engage undergraduate students in a 10-week research experience at the University of Connecticut Department of Nutritional Sciences or nearby community sites focusing on food, nutrition and health....
- The University of Wisconsin-Madison will receive $650,000 from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program to study the effects of paternal diet on early embryonic development and fertility across generations in livestock over a four-year period from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2027. Specifically, the project will evaluate how supplementing rams' diets with methionine...
- This $300,000 federal Project Grant award was provided by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The project aims to evaluate the long-term impacts of strategic supplementation and nutritional restriction during gestation on the development and reproductive capacity of ewe lambs at Colorado State University. Key objectives are to determine how maternal nutrition impacts ewe lamb puberty,...
- This $224,650 Project Grant was awarded on July 1, 2025 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The grant supports research to investigate how supplementing pregnant beef and dairy cows with a specific form of the amino acid methionine (RP-Met) can impact the development and physiology of their offspring. The key goals are to 1) examine whether RP-Met alters the...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded a $650,000 Project Grant under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to the University of Florida to conduct research on developmental programming and its impact on enhancing postnatal growth and production in agriculturally-important animals. The project aims to elucidate the specific mechanisms by which choline acts on the developing bovine embryo to modify phenotype after birth, with a...
- This $180,000 Project Grant award from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program will support research at North Dakota State University (NDSU) to evaluate the impacts of feeding supplemental protein to pregnant beef cattle grazing low-quality pastures. The key objectives are to assess how maternal diet during pregnancy affects skeletal muscle development and growth in the offspring, with the goal of developing...
- The University of Connecticut received a three-year, $650,000 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to study the effects of probiotic supplementation on broiler chicken embryonic development and production outcomes. The grant is funded through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program (AFRI CGPD), which supports research, education and extension activities in food and agricultural sciences....
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded $575,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program to Texas A&M Agrilife Research. The goal of this five-year Project Grant is to better understand how glucose and fructose nutrients released by the uterus are utilized by embryos in pigs, a species where 20-40% of embryos die during the first 20 days of pregnancy due to the low-oxygen uterine cavity environment....
The University of Connecticut will conduct research on the impacts of maternal nutrition on offspring growth and metabolism under a $650,000 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Specifically, the University will test the hypothesis that inadequate maternal nutrition during gestation impairs fetal growth and liver function in offspring through epigenetic regulation of genes. Using a sheep model, the University will study the effects of two levels of maternal nutrient restriction (100% and 60% of requirements) with and without betaine supplementation during gestation. Researchers will collect fetal samples at day 130 of gestation to analyze changes in epigenetic regulation, liver function, muscle growth, and growth/metabolic factors. It is expected this research will identify altered gene expression, methylation and histone modifications in offspring livers based on the maternal gestational diet. Additionally, betaine supplementation may alleviate some negative impacts, improving liver function and overall metabolism. This work supports the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative federal grant program's priority area of addressing metabolic disorders and nutritional deficiencies to enhance agricultural production quality and efficiency.
