The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $490,000 five-year Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program. The grant will support genetic research to improve peanut yields through the development and use of a multi-parent advanced generation intercross peanut population and whole genome sequencing. Key products include the creation of a highly diverse peanut MAGIC population using 18 founder varieties for fine mapping of yield-related traits. Whole genome sequencing of the MAGIC population will provide a dense marker set for high-resolution marker-trait association analysis. Phenotyping platforms will enable objective and accurate collection of phenotype data. The University of Florida will receive $50,000 as a sub-awardee to support genetic dissection of yield traits enabled by high throughput phenotyping and whole genome sequencing of the peanut MAGIC population. The sequencing data and MAGIC population will be made publicly available to further agricultural research and breeding programs.
