The Regents of the University of Minnesota received a $640,849 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture to conduct research on iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) in soybeans. Funded through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program, the research aims to identify genes and molecular mechanisms underlying IDC tolerance in soybeans. Specifically, the university will use forward genetic cloning to study a robust IDC tolerance quantitative trait locus on chromosome 5 and reverse genetic testing to examine the function of a copy number variant encoding a cytochrome P450 involved in biochemical conversion of root exudates. Identifying and validating gene candidates from these loci is expected to increase knowledge of genes underlying soybean IDC tolerance, provide insights into the underlying physiology, enable new breeding tools, and inform improved management strategies. The four-year award commenced on November 1, 2021.
