The University of Missouri System was awarded a $490,000 Project Grant from the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) to conduct research aimed at developing waterlogging and cold-tolerant soybean varieties. The project, which runs from April 2024 to March 2027, will characterize the genetic diversity of 300 soybean varieties in response to waterlogging, cold, and their combination. The research will reveal the molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks underlying stress tolerance in soybeans. This knowledge will be used to develop strategies for creating new climate-resilient soybean varieties to address the impacts of weather fluctuations and heavy precipitation on early-stage soybean cultivation in northern U.S. regions. The University of Missouri System has subcontracted a portion of this work to Texas Tech University System to support the genetic and molecular analyses.
