The California Department of Food and Agriculture will receive $6.325 million under a Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to address critical food security needs in California through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP). Specifically, funding will support nutrition incentives of up to $15 per day for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants to purchase California-grown fresh fruits and vegetables at 95 certified farmers' markets, one mobile market, and 10 additional high-need locations. The project aims to empower SNAP shoppers to improve their food security, health outcomes, and fruit and vegetable consumption as California recovers from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two-year project commenced August 1, 2021.
