THE UNIVERSITY OF GUAM (UOG) IS A LAND-GRANT INSTITUTION IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC. IT SUPPORTS BOTH UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE DEGREES IN COLLEGE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES, OFFERING THE BS DEGREE IN AGRICULTURE AND LIFE SCIENCES AND THE MS DEGREE IN SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE, FOOD AND NATURAL RESOURCES. THE PROPOSED RIIA PROJECT WILL SUPPORT TWO EDUCATIONAL/TEACHING "NEED AREAS": (1)STUDENT EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, AND (2)STUDENT RECRUITMENT, RETENTION, AND EDUCATIONAL EQUITY.THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL SUPPORT STUDENT EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ACTIVITIES BY PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO CONDUCT RESEARCH PROJECTS AND ORAL PRESENTATION OF THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS AT VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUMS ASPRACTICAL EXPERIENCES.THIS WILL DEVELOP STUDENT CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND SCIENTIFIC AND PROFESSIONAL COMPETITIVENESS AFTER THEIR GRADUATION FROM UOG, AND TO PRODUCE A QUALIFIED WORKFORCE TO SERVE THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES SYSTEM ON ISLANDS, REGION AND NATION. THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL PROVIDE PACIFICISLANDERS FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO CONDUCT FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE RESEARCH AND TO PARTICIPATE IN VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUMS.ADDITIONALLY, THE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WILL IMPROVE RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OF STUDENTS IN AGRICULTURE EDUCATION PROGRAM.A PART-TIME RESEARCH ASSOCIATE WILL BE RECRUITED TO ASSIST PD AND FACULTY MEMBERS IN SUPPORTING STUDENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AND TO CONDUCT SYMPOSIUMS.
