The University of Guam has been awarded a $200,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (CFDA 10.308: Resident Instruction, Agriculture, and Food Science Facilities and Equipment Grants) to strengthen its capabilities in high-resolution micro-imagery and next-generation DNA sequencing. The primary objectives are to broaden research and experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students by acquiring new, state-of-the-art technology, including a high-resolution stereo microscope system with advanced imaging software and a next-generation nanopore DNA sequencing device, along with other genetics and molecular biology equipment. This project aims to enhance the University's capacity to document the taxonomic and genetic diversity of tropical and agricultural crops, invasive weeds, and native plant species in Guam and the Western Pacific region, while also providing students more comprehensive learning experiences using the new technology. The award period is from September 1, 2023, to August 31, 2026.
