This Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) provides $500,000 to develop the Science Influencers Program. The program aims to integrate research, education, and extension experiences for 30 undergraduates in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and food, agriculture, natural resources, and human (FANH) fields over five years. Fifteen students will come from underrepresented groups. Through courses, workshops, internships and other experiential activities, the program will increase students' knowledge and skills for communicating science issues to the public. It also establishes an advisory board and partnerships across the Texas A&M University System. The goal is to develop students into effective science communicators who can positively shape discussions on STEM and FANH topics and counter misperceptions about rural areas. Sub-awardee Texas A&M AgriLife Research will implement the program under the parent organization, The Texas A&M University System.
