Montana State University received a $225,621 Project Grant award from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The award will fund a national econometric analysis of how urbanization and other large-scale drivers affect timberland and farmland markets from March 2021 through February 2024. As part of the analysis, the grantee will develop models to assess the relationship between urban land growth, climate change, and rural land prices. The models will account for components related to capitalized future development returns and current agricultural/forestry production returns. The grantee will also project privately optimal land development times under alternative scenarios regarding population growth, climate change, and other market drivers. Oregon State University will contribute to the analysis through a subaward focused on a parcel-level examination of these relationships at a national scale. The research aims to inform discussions on rural land markets, land use change at the urban-rural fringe, and the economic impacts of climate change on agricultural and timber production values.
