- This $314,560 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Emerging Frontiers under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports collaborative research by Purdue University to develop crop varieties that enhance agricultural sustainability. The key objectives are to: Identify genetic targets underlying microbiome-mediated genetic resistance to major current and emergent biotic and abiotic stresses in three widely-grown crops - wheat, tomato, and poplar...
- Summary of Federal Grant Award The Pennsylvania State University received a $7.75 million Project Grant from the Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (CFDA 10.309) to develop integrated solutions for managing bacterial leaf spot (BLS) disease across seed and specialty crop production. Awarded on July 1, 2026, with a completion date of June 30, 2031, this coordinated agricultural project delivers diagnostic assays,...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Cornell University's Office of Sponsored Programs received a $176,856 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, effective May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2029. This predoctoral research project addresses critical gaps in potato disease management by investigating tolerance mechanisms to Dickeya, a major global bacterial plant pathogen affecting potato crops....
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Biological Infrastructure awarded $270,000 under the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) on August 15, 2026, to support a postdoctoral research fellowship investigating the role of plant immunity in maize microbe-dependent heterosis. The fellow will conduct research examining how immune responses to microbes differ between maize pure lines and hybrids, with particular focus on microbe-triggered immunity (MTI)...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The Ohio State University received an $800,000 Project Grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, awarded February 1, 2026, with completion targeted for January 31, 2029. The grant funds research to characterize how Pantoea stewartii subspecies stewartii (PSS), a bacterium that damages maize production through leaf blight and Stewart's wilt, interacts with the plant's xylem...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Delaware State University received a $1,129,572 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, effective February 1, 2026 through January 31, 2030. The award supports research to characterize and understand the mechanisms by which the Potato Virus Y (PVY) HC-Pro protein induces superinfection exclusion (SIE) and suppresses host antiviral defense responses at...
** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** AS FOOD SECURITY INCREASINGLY BECOMES ONE OF THE WORLD'S GRAND CHALLENGES, PLANT DISEASES REDUCE THE YIELD AND QUALITY OF CROPS. LOSSES AFFECT ALL MAJOR WORLD CROPS AND FORCE GROWERS INTO SPENDING RESOURCES TO CONTROL DISEASES, OFTEN WITH NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO TRAIN AND MENTOR FOUR UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY DOCTORAL FELLOWS TO MANAGE PLANT DISEASES SUSTAINABLY. THE PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES UTILIZING THE CLEMSON UNIVERSITY EXPERIMENT STATION AND ITS CONNECTIONS WITH STAKEHOLDERS. FELLOWS WILL FULFILL A RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT IN ONE OF THE RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTERS, COMPLETE AN EXTENSION LEADERSHIP TRAINING, AND GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE IN THE UNIVERSITY'S PLANT AND PEST DIAGNOSTIC CLINIC. THE PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES A CORE CURRICULUM IN PLANT PATHOLOGY WITH A FOCUS ON TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHING. PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE TO TRAIN A COHESIVE COHORT OF DOCTORAL STUDENTS TO: 1) CONDUCT TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH THROUGH DISSERTATION PROJECTS THAT UTILIZE A SYSTEMS APPROACH, 2) COMPLETE COURSEWORK FOR A SOLID BACKGROUND IN PLANT PATHOLOGY AND THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY, 3) DEVELOP EFFECTIVE SKILLS IN COMMUNICATION AND LEADERSHIP NEEDED FOR CONNECTING WITH KEY SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITIES AND STAKEHOLDERS, AND 4) INCREASE THE DIVERSITY OF THE NATION'S SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE IN THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES. BY HELPING TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS THAT ADVANCE FOOD SECURITY, THIS PROJECT ALIGNS WITH USDA STRATEGIC GOAL NO. 2.
